Recently, Meghan Markle showed her fashion flair by donning on a black & white stripped blazer over a black tee, and then topped it with a Havana; looking cool, current and collected.
However, Markle’s colour choices hark back to the Victorian era. It was just after 1880 that both women and men took to wearing black & white as a fashion story; and it's continued since. Karl Lagerfeld put it perfectly, “Black-and-White always looks modern, whatever that word means”.
It’s an ironic pairing. Black is considered to be a non-colour, or the absence of colour, while white is the total combination of all colours. Both exist at either end of the colour spectrum; yet they work perfectly, the Yin and Yang of fashion. Two contradictory forces combining to form a perfect unity. As Coco Chanel commented, “Black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony”
Fashion is said to be fickle...except when it’s in black and white. A combo, that with just a few tweaks, can go from clean minimalist, to rock chic, romantic elegance, street casual or dress up formal. 1880 or 2080, we will always be rocking black and white.
